The Surprising Health Benefits of Apples

Give Your Health a Boost with an Apple a Day

Published 5/6/09 By Kim Daugherty       www.associatedcontent.com

We've all heard the old adage, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." But is there scientific proof to the health benefits of eating apples? Apples have shown to have a number of health benefits, for everything from promoting hair growth and improving memory to keeping life-threatening cancers at bay.
Whether you are drinking apple juice every morning for breakfast or grabbing an apple for a healthy afternoon snack, you will see a significant improvement in your long term health and even in your appearance simply by adding an apple a day to your regular diet.
Looking Good! Eating apples or apple products on a regular basis have shown to add vibrancy to your appearance. The International Union of Nutritional Sciences published a study earlier this decade that showed eating apples, as well as other fruits, vegetables, and olive oil, on a regular basis had protective results on the damaging effects of the sun on our skin.
Apples have also been shown to have a chemical compound that promotes healthy hair growth. While it's not clear yet if apples improve hair growth in areas of the human scalp that have already shown signs of balding, it does promote hair growth in parts of the scalp that currently have hair growth.
Staying Healthy! It's not a secret that apples are rich in antioxidants, those naturally occurring compounds that protect our bodies from harmful free radicals. Free radicals are a by-product of our own body processes and cannot be avoided. But you can fight their effects by eating more apples!
Antioxidants, naturally found in high quantities in apples, have been scientifically proven by research scientists around the globe to reduce the physical degeneration of our mental processes, and have been shown to be especially helpful in combating the onset of Alzheimer's. Antioxidants also promote longevity in our motor skills as we age.
Eating apples regularly has shown in studies to protect people from cancers of the bladder, prostate, and lungs due to their high content of dietary flavonoids, an agent believed to have an effect on carcinogenic environmental factors. Eating apples regularly has also been proven to decrease the incidence of breast, colon, and liver cancers.

Apples are a fruit that have been found through medical studies to promote heart and cardiovascular health as well. For the human population, apples are a major source of quercetin, a chemical that has been shown to decrease the risk of thrombotic stroke. The flavonoids in apples have also been shown to decrease coronary disease and the rate of heart attacks in a medical study conducted in Finland.
Studies conducted for almost three decades have proven conclusively that consuming apples or apple products on a regular basis also reduces
your cholesterol level. Another flavonoid in apples has been found to protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis by increasing bone density. Those coping with diabetes will also benefit from consuming apples. The pectin in apples has been shown to reduce the need for insulin the body, making the disease easier to manage.

Breathe Easy. Many studies have been conducted over the years to research the health benefits of consuming apples in association with respiratory health, and the studies ae conclusive. Apples consumed during pregnancy have been shown to reduce the rate of asthma in those children. For children with asthma, drinking apple juice has resulted in significantly less wheezing. Apples have also been medically proven to reduce the onset of some types of lung cancer. And in recent medical studies, apples have also been scientifically proven to improve lung function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease when ingested in its solid fruit form.
The scientific research has proven time and time again that there are significant health effects for eating the proverbial apple a day.

So the next time you're craving a healthy snack, reach for an apple!

Healthy Living Tip—September

With shorter days just around the corner, it is important to try to keep the changing season from affecting your sleep patterns. One easy way is to synchronize your sleep with the changing daylight hours. Within five minutes of waking, try to get some exposure to bright, outside light. This should
last for about 30 minutes. A morning walk or even eating your breakfast by a sunny window can do the trick. Your body will respond by becoming more
alert. At night, avoid bright light in the two to three hours before bedtime.
This allows your body to become sleepy more naturally.
